|Designer||Micheal Taiwo Akinkunmi|
Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old student in London, designed the national flag of Nigeria. His winning entry in a competition held in 1959 to design the national flag of Nigeria had a red sun with streaming rays placed in the white stripe and two green stripes on either side of the white stripe. The sun was removed by the judges and the flag was chosen as the national flag. It was first officially raised on October 1, 1960, Nigeria's Independence day
